Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings of bull from outrageous candidate or to take up the remote, perchance to watch what re-runs may come. . .
I will be in Seattle for an academic conference, but will probably be there in time to catch the Thrilla from Wasilla go at it with -- well, whatever Biden's fancy boxing name would be. Can't think of one. I watched part of one of her Alaska Gov. debates on some YouTube clip, and it's probably worth noting that so long as she's talking about provincial matters, she holds her own. But my guess is that talking crisply about how to shoot wolves from small planes isn't going to be the subject of this debate. Bottom line is she doesn't know much about national affairs, much less international ones. And as a teacher, I know that when a "student" crams for the test, it's usually not too hard to tell. The responses tend to be painfully stiff and you can tell they don't come from serious reflection but rather from dimly remembered Spark Notes or some such matter. That's the way Palin almost always sounds to me.
Further thought on the veep debate: I keep reading articles implying (worriedly) that Palin will manage to win back much of her positive initial rating if she can only project a folksy, feisty image -- I doubt it. Once people figure out that you're a hopeless ignoramus -- as Palin's recent numbers would seem to indicate they have -- it's pretty difficult to undo such a judgment with a few "ya knows" and "you betchas." I just don't think that kind of act is going to work for her this time. She really will have to step up and say something intelligent that hasn't been obviously shoveled into her mind by somebody else yesterday afternoon. I haven't seen any indication that she's capable of that on national/international matters, but we shall see....
Oh I don't know, much of the public will be drunk by that hour and they will remember only what the propagandists tell them they remember.
The smug declarations of a "Palin victory" will be more fun to watch than the debate itself - that's if you consider projectile vomiting a pleasant passtime.
