For those you who may not know, the US and Canada have just inked an agreement to allow US police into Canada to investigate and pursue, well, whomever (along with our RCMP). Check out the story on the "Canadians" link above.
Once arrogated, power is seldom given up. Nixon's presidency was called "imperial," but surely every presidency since then has been imperial, too.
That's why I think Bush 43's tenure was the beginning of the end for the republic -- he grabbed so much power for his successors not to give up that it's all but bound to end badly....
Dino, technically worse up here. With a Westminster parliamentary system the head dude runs the whole show. And he's not even elected by the public as a leader (no one votes for the prime minister, the winning party chooses him, as you no doubt know). If the winning party controls the House, the direction is set by one guy... in our present case, the ideologically-driven neo-con, Stephen Harper. Who is, of course, guided by his American political consultants.
That aside, this new agreement and I suspect more to come are serious threats to hard-won civil liberties to citizens of both countries. But all in the name of creating a single American geopolitical block, so it must all be good, right?
We welcome civil discourse from all people but express no obligation to allow contributors and readers to be trolled. Any comment that sinks to the level of bigotry, defamation, personal insults, off-topic rants, and profanity will be deleted without notice.

"Prolonged detention" is a euphemism for "The rule of law is for giving lip service to, and that's about it."
