Let it snow

It snows in New Jersey, as I guess we all know and yet as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, we're still arguing who has the responsibility to do what and with which and for whom. Some New Jersey people are quite angry with Republican governor Chris Christie who said of the recent heavy blizzard:
“If someone is snowed into their house, that’s not our responsibility.”

I think they have the right to be staggered by such a statement. Earthquake, flood, wildfire, tornadoes, hurricanes; disasters man made and natural: for all these things the government to which New Jersey taxpayers contribute their money has no responsibility. As if to emphasize the point and flaunt the banner of limited government, Christie proudly said:
“I had a great five days with my children. I promised that.”

when the going gets tough, the rich and powerful go to Disney World.

When the Republicans abandon their posts, Partying while New Orleans drowns, for example, is more than simple misprision. Playing Nero when things burn or flood or get buried is an affirmation of core Republican values, amongst which is "every man for himself" when it comes to questioning the need to rescue the elderly, the helpless, the children from being cut off from food and medical care and a needed paycheck.

No, we can't afford it, quacks the gubernatorial duck and can't be bothered with it either, and besides, I need to ride the teacups and get my picture taken with Mickey Mouse.

We expect this. I'm a bit more surprised at the blog comments from the tea suckers and Republican Chia pets who seem to think the inability of a State that gets snow every year to deal with that snow well enough to ensure public safety, is something they can blame on President Obama. After all, the President also takes vacations. That's what we need to be angry about say the trolls.

I know. It's hard to follow such a stroke of stupid with any further comments. It sucks the air out of the room, but that's what we've become in America: a cesspool of non-sequitur and duplicity, vast and deep. A pit full of dogs tearing ourselves apart for the profit of others. We're able to absolve Bush of any criticism in setting an all time record for vacation days, including those care-free parties he attended, playing air guitar while New Orleans drowned, but Obama? That's different, the boy should have been out there with a shovel while Christie did his heckuva job on the water slide in Orlando. Hell it's his duty to keep his government hands out of our lives, isn't it?

  1. Capt. Fogg,

Well, now, it's a certainty that "O'Bummer" is responsible for that NJ snow. I'm also holding him guiltworthy for the recent stretch of rain and subsequent dreary weather we spoiled weather-brats have seen here in SoCal. It's all his fault, somehow. I'm sure of it.

But seriously, yes, it seems to me that the basic Republican attitude is even worse than you're kindly describing it to be: the government is to have the power of life and death over us, to command silent obedience and all that sort of security-theater nonsense, but in return it owes us NOTHING. Freud's Stern Father has nothing over "the Government" as the recent version of the GOP construes it.

  2. There is an endless stream of stupid coming from the right these days. The half-witted, half-term governor of Alaska mocks the FLOTUS for encouraging children to eat healthy foods and exercise more while appearing on a cheesy reality teevee show where she bludgeoned a fish to death and shot a caribou--just to watch it die.

That a percentage of the American people admire such dreck as Palin and Beck is disturbing, that the MSM gives them a platform to broadcast their sour meanness and idiocy is depressing to the point of my wanting to swallow slugs and slime.

I'm going back to bed. I have a mizwable code.

  3. Captain Fogg - Playing Nero … (et. al.)

Joisey voters seem to have a decidedly bad habit of electing Neros, and they all seem to share this in common: A right and proper Christian name starting with some variation of ‘Chris’ as in …

Christie Todd Whitman whose promised cuts in state taxes resulted in huge increases in local property taxes. As EPA Administrator in the Bush years, Crusty Witless gained fame and celebrity for reassuring New Yorkers after the 9/11 attack that the “air is safe to breathe and the water is safe to drink." Tell that one to the 9/11 Responders.

The latest Nero reincarnation has a double dose of that ole good Christian name, Chris Christie, and a triple dose of verbal abuse hurled at any anyone who dares criticize him.

What makes these losers so attractive to Joisey voters? All of Jerry Buttafuoco’s relatives live in Joisey.

  4. "All of Jerry Buttafuoco’s relatives live in Joisey. "

Actually a good number of them are in South Florida right now, honking at stoplights, using three lanes in every turn, wearing plaid shorts and clogging up the roads that rightfully belong to us crackers in our 12 foot high swamp buggies.

Don't forget Christine, 'I'm not a witch' O'Dumbell and her take off that condom for Christ campaign.

The messianic name didn't work for Charlie Christ though. Even that advantage couldn't compensate for his hesitancy to advocate that people of questionable racial "abstammung" carry passports to cross the street. Damned liberal! The nerve of him to run against the Party of God.

That's right.. as a taxpayer and an American, I have the RIGHT to not be inconvenienced by extremes of natural occurrences! If I choose to rebuild my condo on the beach after the third time, it's the GOVERNMENT'S responsibility to protect me from my own poor judgment and unforeseen events out of our control!! Not.

  6. Sure, and if I live in Oklahoma or Texas or Kansas and my house is sucked into an EF-5 it's my problem and the insurance company I pay a fortune to can rightly tell me to go EF myself. Let's not even talk about earthquakes in California, or mud slides or wild fires.

No, I want my tax money to go to things that help me alone and not a single one of those lazy idiots who get hit by floods and wildfires and ice storms and microbursts and lightning strikes and epidemics and sink holes, bridge collapses, dam breaks and terrorist attacks. That won't happen to me.

What about those idiots who chose to work in the World Trade Center? Why should we care about their problems? We're Americans here, not some damn Commies. Let them pay their own way. 'cause what's mine is mine and so is yours.

But don't worry. I've lived in a disaster area 3 times in the last 6 years and the Gummint doesn't do much at all. George showed up in '04, spent 5 minutes having his picture taken and went to a party in Miami Beach where there was still air conditioning and lots of Republican good cheer.

FEMA gave out generators to a few people who had trucks to pick them up, some bottled water to people who could get their cars out of the wreckage and everyone else was on his own, old and young, rich and poor. We had only ourselves: the Red Cross, public spirited neighbors, the Radio amateurs, the EMT's, the police. It didn't cost you much - not enough for you to complain about, not anything really. It costs us in high premiums, not you.

New Jersey has snowplows and equipment. It snows every year. The people of the state pay for them. They should have the benefit of them. Federal highways are the responsibility of the Federal government and we all pay for them and their maintenance. If you don't like the cost, don't drive on them. If you don't like being part of a country - part of Americans standing up for other Americans --- well there must be a jungle out there somewhere.
