Keeping with the theme of cartoons, here is a card from someecards.com that seems quite appropriate given the media's current obsession. Couldn't have said it better myself.
"Wouldn't change much. The radio-gods would still rule the Repubs, and hollywood would rule the left."
Very true James!
When this funeral is done, maybe, just maybe, this crap will stop and we can start focusing on things like the economy, health care, things that ACTUALLY matter.
TAO - I don't really understand. If we had a truly informed citizenry, that would make a huge difference. People will listen to whatever gets thrown at them. If important and useful information gets thrown at them, at least some of it is bound to stick.
The larger issue extends beyond the coverage of Jackson's death - the media is astonishingly irresponsible.
They constantly play to the lowest-common-denominator, get caught up in he-said-she-said games, treat equal air-time for political opponents as actual journalism, are beholden to the special interests and the powerful elite, fail to ask important and difficult questions of our leaders, and pursue news as a means of entertainment and not education (and to the offensive point of bending over backwards to profit off of celebrity deaths).
I can't say I'm surprised when things like this occur, and I've certainly been primed for the excessive and obsessive coverage of Jackson's death, but it seems like the media still finds ways to outdo itself and catch me off-guard.
I was in England and France during the Diana mass insanity, and I don't know if this tops it or not, but I'm beginning to understand why people become mass murderers. At times like this I pray for another asteroid to put the planet out of its misery.
We welcome civil discourse from all people but express no obligation to allow contributors and readers to be trolled. Any comment that sinks to the level of bigotry, defamation, personal insults, off-topic rants, and profanity will be deleted without notice.
Oops! We've already missed all three!
ReplyDeleteOh, and if we had an INFORMED citizenry that would change things how?

ReplyDeleteIn fact, it may have been good that so much was going on. I haven't heard too much from Rush in awhile, probably because of all the hoopla about MJ.
